What the study found

Prolonged exhalation slowed heart rate, raised cardiac parasympathetic activity and increased risky choices. The shift came from greater sensitivity to potential gains, not reduced concern about losses. People with larger parasympathetic increases showed stronger ventromedial prefrontal and precuneus responses to reward.

Limitations

Instructed breathing in a scanner; healthy adults only; a single decision task.

Neurodesign interpretation

If a room really does slow people's breathing, this study suggests it could also make them more willing to take a gamble. No environment was tested, so that first link is still a hypothesis.

Possible design implications

Spaces claimed to slow breathing (calm rooms, pre-procedure areas) may also change how people weigh options. That is a consideration for consent and financial or medical decision settings, not a benefit to advertise.
