What the study found
With matching cues, children and adults were equally accurate. With conflicting cues, children reported the emotion they heard at above-chance rates across every emotion pairing, while adults responded at chance or went with what they saw. The auditory bias was strongest in younger children.
Limitations
Cross-sectional, so the age shift is inferred rather than followed; the older-child group is small (n=30); staged clips of bodies and nonverbal vocalisations, not real rooms or speech.
Neurodesign interpretation
Adults can override a harsh sound with a friendly face. Young children mostly can't. A calm-looking pediatric room with loud, echoing voices may still read as alarming to a 6-year-old.
Possible design implications
In pediatric wards, classrooms and waiting areas, the acoustic channel (staff voices, alarms, reverberant shouting) may shape how children read a situation more than what they see. Treat acoustic design in children's settings as part of how a space communicates emotion, as well as noise control.
