What the study found

Pain ratings changed with arm posture and stimulation site, with a significant interaction, but the effects were very small and did not follow the predicted pattern of more pain closer to the body center. Heart rate and skin conductance did not change with location.

Limitations

The hypothesised gradient did not appear. Young student sample; 60 repeated stimuli caused habituation; fixed stimulus temperature; proprioceptive cues only.

Neurodesign interpretation

Peripersonal space is an attractive idea for design near the body: bedside layouts, treatment chairs, clinical procedures. This preregistered test found location effects but not the tidy near-is-worse gradient. That makes it more useful as a boundary condition than as a rule.

Possible design implications

None yet. It supports the premise that where something sits relative to the body can change experience, but not the direction.

Why it stays in the corpus
